Chile to Argentina: a Border Crossing Vlog

In my second vlog ever (first vlog here), I’m hitchhiking across the border from Chile to Argentina over two days’ time. The border crossing is at Paso Rio Jeinemeni. That’s a river that forms the border per the 1902 agreement between Chile and Argentina. The small river drains into the binational lake called Lake General Carrera in Chile and Lake Buenos Aires in Argentina. The lake also has a native Tehuelche name: Chelenko.

I’m running out of days on my Chilean visa, so I have to hurry! I wasn’t paying attention, because 90 days seemed like an endless time at first. But these countries here are huge. I’m not sure how I could have optimized my time in Chile better, though, because I felt the entire time that I was hitchhiking at a high speed.

To cross a very specific border from Chile to Argentina required me to take a (highly subsidized, so it’s cheap) Chilean ferry across a beautiful lake. Then I had to deal with immigration and no man’s land between the two countries. It’s autumn in South America in April and I’m still going further south, into the cold!

Patagonia is a beautiful place to hitchhike though and after almost 90 days in Chile, it’s time for a little change.
