Komárno, Slovakia 💕 Language. Right now, Tetum Prasa* is on my mind with my upcoming trip to Asia. But here in Komárno, people mostly speak Hungarian as a first language and (perhaps) Slovak as a second language. 🇸🇰🗣️🇭🇺

The Danube here forms the border between Hungary and Slovakia. This Slovak town used to be part of Hungary until some people redrew the borders to make Komárno a part of (Czecho)Slovakia. The ties with the people across the bridge in the Hungarian Komárom were severed.🏘️🛃🏞️🛂🏘️
.
Both Hungary and Slovakia are now part of the EU and Schengen, so people are free to come and go as they please over the Elizabeth bridge.🌉
.
Though big rivers like the Danube often form damn near perfect borders between cultures and languages, it's never actually Perfect. And I do think opening the borders instead of redrawing the borders (and not going to war) is a more elegant solution for minorities or regional majorities.
.
And lots of people now have jobs on both sides of the river in the Euro/Forint money exchange business 😂💱
.
Komárno is also Slovakia's biggest port, not - as you might expect - Bratislava. You may wonder if it counts because it's on a river, but the navigability of the Danube effectively makes countries like Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, and Moldova not as landlocked as other countries.⚓⛴️

*Tetum Prasa is the language of Timor Leste's capital city Dili.

Danube Floodplains, Hungary/Slovakia 💕 Morning fire 🔥Will you do something rewarding today? 🙂

This is what we woke up to after freecamping that one night in the floodplain forest. We'd paddled 36 kilometers to get to this camp spot and we had to paddle 26 kilometers more to get to Gönyű - the first biggish town in Hungary. 🏞️🛶🏕️
.
I hadn't slept very well that night, so getting up at sunrise to pack everything up and go wasn't actually that hard to do. The Earth's rotation rewarded us with this view of the trees on the Hungarian shore. That magic moment when it's a cloudy day but the sun still reaches underneath the cover to light up the trees.🌤️🌥️🌳🌲🌅
.
It's funny how one of the toughest paddle days was also one of the most rewarding ones. This is something I've always instinctively understood: if it's easy, it's probably 'meh'. 😕
.
I don't want to live in a constant state of 'meh'.
.

Slovak-Hungarian Border Area 💕 It took some time to find a spot, but we eventually found an elevated space to call our home for the night.🏕️🌌🌙

Dunajské luhy is a protected landscape area you've probably never heard of. It forms the border between Slovakia and Hungary.🏞️🌄🌲🌳🐿️
.
The border mostly flows through the middle of the river, but probably because the border has been decided upon ages ago, it's not perfect. The river meanders and changes the shores. But the border remains fixed.🇸🇰🇭🇺
.
Though we're on the Eastern shore which is usually the Slovak side, this particular outcrop was apparently Hungarian territory. So this was our first night in Hungary.⛺😪😴🌠
