Ukraine

I was in Ukraine in 2013 during my first big backpacking and hitchhiking trip and in 2021 when I returned as a digital nomad. The first time, I entered overland from Slovakia to Uzhgorod, visited Lviv, Kyiv, then took marshrutkas and eventually switched to hitchhiking to go to Simferopol, Yalta, and a short stop in Sevastopol before hitchhiking out of Crimea to Odesa. This was all before the war and before Crimea came under Russian control. The second time, ahem now, is in 2021 during the coronavirus pandemic. Jonas and I flew from Tashkent, Uzbekistan to Kyiv in Ukraine. It was Jonas' first time in Ukraine and we intend to stay here the full 90 days that our entry stamps allow. Because it was my second visit, I knew much better all the things I wanted to do in this country than before. Though I'm currently in this country, there are some things I won't be able to do on… Read more >

Kayak Trip Day 40: Kúpele Patince to Štúrovo

The events in this story happened on Monday the 19th of August, 2019. We paddled from a Slovakian resort town called Kúpele Patince to Štúrovo, also in Slovakia. This stretch of the Danube river forms the border between Slovakia and Hungary. Across the bridge in Štúrovo is the (more famous) Hungarian town of Esztergom. This was a distance of about 33 kilometers. Our Stay in Kúpele Patince As you may know from my previous post, we didn’t stay in Kúpele Patince by choice. We wanted to stay in a town called Moča, but Booking canceled our reservation there. The ownerContinue reading

Kayak Trip Day 24: Aschach to Linz

Events chronicled in this post happened on the 5th of July, 2019. We paddled 25.3 kilometers from the town Aschach an der Donau to Linz in Austria. Linz is the capital of the state of Oberösterreich (Upper Austria). Then in Linz we’d take a break from paddling for a little while. Leaving Aschach an der Donau for Linz We spent two nights and one day in Aschach an der Donau. In the day, we worked on our own projects from our hotel Josepa Hirsch. We mostly went out to eat, do the shopping for the continuation of our trip, andContinue reading

Kayak Trip Day 17: Friesheim to Straubing

Events in this story happened on the 19th of June, 2019. We paddled our inflatable canoe named ‘Zucchini’ from a small village near Regensburg named Friesheim to the bigger town Straubing. It was a distance of 36 kilometers, which is a new record for us. Leaving Friesheim for Straubing As you might know from the previous post, Friesheim was a little bit of a struggle for us. The town is very small and we didn’t have food security on arrival. All those troubles disappeared with the help from our hosts and their vehicle and the local butcher’s shop, which alsoContinue reading

Ushuaia: “The End of the World” or whatever…

Twelve days ago I had my last ride to Ushuaia, Argentina. Ushuaia also goes by “The End of the World” (Argentina’s greatest marketing success!). I smoked my last cigarette upon arrival. Today I leave the place that embraced my – for now – last cigarette butt. I’ll hitchhike back to where the sun wants to shine. I just made this silly plan to quit smoking four weeks ago. That’s when I still thought it would be poetic AF to go cold turkey at the End of the World. Little did I know Ushuaia would be a supermassive black hole forContinue reading

Books I Love

When I'm not talking to people or sleeping, I'm most likely reading a book in a park. If the weather allows that. Here's an incomplete list of books I've enjoyed while on the road. Dreams from the Endz by Faïza Guène While staying in Belgrade for one week during the Danube kayak trip in 2024, we had an Airbnb with a magnificent book shelf. I knew I wanted to pick one book to read out of this abundance of choice. I settled on this translated novel (original title: Du rêve pour les oufs) since it's about the immigrant experience from Algeria to France and the precariousness of living in Europe without permanent status; a topic I feel I haven't engaged enough with. To me, immigration is the original form of travel. This book was a wonderful read about the dual belonging voiced by Ahlème, a young done-with-your-shit woman who has too many challenges on her plate. Also, Algeria is a… Read more >

Hiking Fontainhas, the Highest Point of Brava

This article is about the highest peak of Brava island named ‘Fontainhas’ in Cabo Verde. It is not to be confused with the hike from Chã de Igreja/Cruzinha to Fontainhas/Ponta do Sol in Santo Antão! Intro Fontainhas is at 976 meters the highest point of the tiniest island in Cabo Verde: Brava. Brava is truly tiny; you can walk pretty much across the entire island in one day. I did this hike to the peak from Nova Sintra to Cachaço. Nova Sintra is the biggest settlement in Brava, and probably where you’ll be staying at. Hiking to Fontainhas without aContinue reading

Cycling Trip from Aalborg to Skagen and Grenen – Semester Abroad in Aarhus

I wrote this story about a cycling trip from Aalborg to Skagen back in 2012. At that time, I lived in the Danish city of Aarhus for my semester abroad at Aarhus University. It first appeared on one of those travel blogging websites. Back in 2012, I still thought I’d grow up to become an accountant. A lot has changed in between. When I became serious about travel blogging, I moved this content from the travel blogging website to my own—almost eight years later. At the time of writing, I was 21 years old. I don’t agree much anymore withContinue reading

Kayak Trip Day 30: Stein to Zwentendorf

Events of this story occurred on Saturday the 20th of July, 2019. We paddled our inflatable kayak Zucchini from Stein an der Donau (near Krems) to Zwentendof an der Donau, both in Lower Austria. That turned out to be a distance of 29.1 kilometers on the Danube river. Leaving Stein an der Donau for Zwentendorf We only stayed in Stein an der Donau for one night. None of the accommodations near the river had more than one night available. With this reality, we decided to just hurry up with our paddling progress. So today, we paddled from Stein to Zwentendorf.Continue reading
