Barbados is an island country in the Caribbean I haven’t traveled to (yet). The closest I’ve been to Barbados is the Dominican Republic in 2014 during a short stopover in Punta Cana. As an EU citizen, I could stay up to 90 days in the easternmost island of the Caribbean.
Once there are posts about Barbados, they’ll show up below this page. Until then, maybe read something about Brazil, Mexico, Panama, or the Dominican Republic?
Things I’d Like to Do in Barbados
- Hitchhike with the locals and pick up a few words or phrases in (English-based) Bajan Creole
- Visit the capital Bridgetown and its main sights: the UNESCO WHS Historic Center and the Garrison, the Barbados Museum and Historical Society, the Museum of Parliament and National Heroes Gallery, and maybe the George Washington House. Barbados has a history of slavery and British colonialism to learn about
- Drink rum and maybe visit a distillery. If I’m in the country in August, I might be there for the Crop Over sugarcane harvest festival and see the Morgan Lewis Windmill in action
- (Hitch)hike up the highest point of Barbados: Mount Hillaby (340masl). There’s a road to the top
- Visit some more remote corners of the island: the Animal Flower Cave in the north with its sea anemones, Kitridge Point (the easternmost point of Barbados and therefore the Caribbean, too),
- Do some more touristy things as well, such as visiting Harrison’s Cave, the St. Nicholas Abbey Heritage Railway, Sam Lord’s Castle, the Barbados Wildlife Reserve, the Fisherpond House, and the Sunbury Plantation House
- Rent a kayak and paddle a bit below the sea cliffs in parts of the island
- Visit some of the churches, mosques, and (the only) synagogue on the island. I’m also interested in learning more about Rastafarianism, especially Ital vegan/vegetarian food. I’ve seen many Ital restaurants mapped all over Barbados
- Hike the Bathsheba Coastal Walk, which is 7.2-kilometers long between Bathsheba and Bath Beach
- Urbex at some abandoned places, such as Earth Station, the Chase Vault, and some signal stations. I’d also like to try and find the Project HARP Space Gun, but it seems to be rusting away at a fast pace
- Visit the four big lighthouses of Barbados: Ragged Point Lighthouse, Harrison’s Point Light House, Needham’s Point Lighthouse, and South Point Lighthouse
- Lastly, I’m wondering if Barbados has any ferry connections. If it does not, then I’d like to crew a yacht to get on/off the island. Here’s my CrewBay profile if you’d like to see my sailing experiences
