Djibouti is a country I haven’t traveled to (yet). The closest I’ve been to the Horn of Africa was when I was in the United Arab Emirates, but that is still very far away. I’m very interested in traveling to Djibouti.
I hope that in the future, you can find posts about Djibouti on this page.
Things I’d Like to Do in Djibouti
- Hitchhike with the locals! Even just a short ride is fine with me. I don’t think I’d be hitchhiking a lot here because of the low population density and scarcity of busy roads. But the National Highway 1 to Ethiopia looks promising
- Explore the capital Djibouti City: the restaurants, beaches, nearby islands, port area, markets, and mosques
- Go hiking in the mountains. Think Ardoukôba volcano, Day Forest National Park (i.e. Goda Mountains), Mabla Mountains, mount Garbi, mount Hemed, and the beautiful Boura Mountains. It’s unlikely that all of them are accessible to visitors. The highest peak Mousa Ali (2.021masl) is probably not climbable without special permits since it’s on a tri-border point
- Visit other natural places such as Lake Abhe and the saltier-than-the-Dead-Sea Lake Assal. The biggest mangrove forest is in Godoria and Ghoubbet-el-Kharab
- Besides getting around with French and very basic Arabic, I’d like to learn some Somali and Afar words
- Take the train to or from Ethiopia on the Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway. I’d also like to see the (abandoned) railway stations and viaducts of the (parallel?) Ethio-Djibouti Railways and maybe cycle them with a special bike (location)
- Visit as many Djiboutian lighthouses as I can
- Enjoy the beaches if it’s not too hot. I’d definitely want to visit Moucha Island
- Travel off to some remote places. Think Dikhil area (As Eyla, there are farm stays), a ferry ride from Djibouti City to Obock and Tadjoura, and something around Khôr ʽAngar at the Bab-el-Mandab Strait (where some people were plotting to build the Bridge of the Horns)
- Eat Djiboutian or regional foods, such as laloh. I think it will be very difficult to be a vegetarian there, so I’ll probably eat some meat to survive
- Visit some ancient sites, such as the rock engravings of Abourma, the tumulus of Awellos, the rock paintings of Balho
Once I collect new ideas for travel to Djibouti, I will add them to this list.
