Jersey (Channel Islands)

The Bailiwick of Jersey is a British Crown Dependency I haven’t traveled to (yet). I’ve been to Bretagne in France and in the south of England, but I’ve never come close to actually visiting. But a visit has been in the making for a long time as I was going to visit it in 2015 when I was hitchhiking along the edges of Europe (sorta).

I hope that in the future, you can find posts about the island of Jersey on this page. For now, perhaps read about other places in Europe, such as France, Ireland, or Belgium?

Planning a Trip to Jersey? 🏡
Make sure to book your accommodation ahead of time ⏰ I’ve ended up too many times in mediocre leftover hotels or apartments far away from the action because I had to book last minute…🙄 I always book on Booking or Airbnb because they have the most options 😇 Not quite sure about your trip? Many places offer a full refund a few days before your stay! 💸

Things I’d Like to Do in Jersey

Population: ~103.267 (2023)

  • Hitchhike across the island. It’s not that big, so I expect lots of short hitches and quite some walking
  • Explore the capital St Helier and the government house in neighboring St Saviour. I’m especially looking forward to visiting Elizabeth Castle and St Helier’s Hermitage by amphibious vehicle. There’s also the signal station at Fort Regent near the harbor. Besides those, there’s the Jersey Maritime Museum, Jersey Museum and Art Gallery, and the Pomme d’Or Hotel
  • Pick up some specific Jèrriais words or phrases and try out some (vegetarian) Jersey foods and drinks (nièr beurre, cider, cabbage loaf, and Jersey wonders)
  • Visit some other sites on the island, such as La Hougue Bie, Pallot Heritage Steam Museum, Mont Orgueil Castle, the Glass Church, St Aubin Fort, some Conway’s/Martello towers, Battery Moltke, Seymour Tower, La Cotte de St Brelade, Grosnez Castle, Portelet Tower, Le Don Hilton, Hohlgangsanlagen tunnels, Jersey National Park, Les Mielles Nature Reserve, Hamptonne Country Life Museum, and Channel Islands Military Museum
  • Rent a bike and cycle from St Helier to Corbière and enjoy some hiking trails such as the Bonne Nuit to Boulay Bay Trail. I’d also like to visit the highest point Les Platons (136masl)
  • Kayak/boat trip to Les Minquiers and see the stone cottages. The same goes for Les Écréhous islets by boat day trip
  • Go ‘coasteering‘, which is navigating the heavily tidal coast by climbing, jumping off cliffs, swimming, and floating in a lifejacket, wetsuit, and helmet to explore caves and the like
  • Arrive or depart the island by ferry to or from St Malo or Granville in France, Poole or Portsmouth in England, and Saint Peter Port in Guernsey. The big routes are operated by Condor Ferries and Manche Îles Express
  • Appreciate the depictions on the Jersey Pound banknotes
  • Check out the airport and perhaps take a flight in a small plane to Guernsey or elsewhere
  • Visit as many lighthouses as possible. The most famous ones are La Corbière and La Tour de Vinde/Noirmont Point Light. But since it’s an island with treacherous waters, there’s more: St Catherines Breakwater, Demie de Pas, Gorey Pier, Greve d’Azette, Sorel Point, and Mount Ube Lighthouse
  • Stay in some historic sites, such as this Radio Tower that looks like a good place for a short workation. Perhaps getting a Jersey Heritage membership makes sense to get discounts on visiting all these places
  • See the remotest islets: Pierres de Lecq and Les Dirouilles. These rocks are possibly visible from Jersey or perhaps from a ferry if one is lucky with the route and the weather
  • Maybe relax and do some writing? It looks like a nice island to stay in for a month to just write and do daily walkies
