Anguilla

Anguilla is a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean I haven’t traveled to (yet). The closest I’ve been to Anguilla is the Dominican Republic in 2014 during a short stopover in Punta Cana. As an EU citizen, I could stay up to 3 months on this island. With a population of a little over 15.000 people, this island looks my speed.

Planning a Trip to Anguilla? 🏡
Make sure to book your accommodation ahead of time ⏰ I’ve ended up too many times in mediocre leftover hotels or apartments far away from the action because I had to book last minute…🙄 I always book on Booking or Airbnb because they have the most options 😇 Not quite sure about your trip? Many places offer a full refund a few days before your stay! 💸

Once there are posts about Anguilla, they’ll show up below this page. Until then, maybe read something about BrazilMexicoPanama, or the Dominican Republic?

Things I’d Like to Do in Anguilla

  • Hitchhike with the locals! I’d also love to pick up some Anguillan Creole words and phrases
  • Visit the capital called The Valley: learn about the pre-European Arawak people that were native to the island, the slavery period on Anguilla, and the attempt at independence thwarted by the British Operation Sheepskin
  • Hike up the highest point Crocus Hill (73masl). I’d also love to do some other hiking trails. Since the main island is only 25 kilometers in length, they all seem very doable
  • If I find myself there during Easter, attend the Festival del Mar. And if I’m there in March, attend the Moonsplash Festival. Or if I’m there in late July/early August, enjoy the Anguilla Summer Festival
  • Visit the Fountain Cavern National Park (Big Spring and Fountain Cavern petroglyph sites)
  • Take the ferry to Saint-Martin or Sint Maarten (same island, split in two between France and the Netherlands). The ferry only takes 20 minutes and goes many times a day, every day and it costs about US$75 in 2023
  • Do a day trip to Scrub Island (private) and its abandoned airstrip. Similarly, I’d like to visit nearby Little Scrub Island and the farther away Sandy Island with its restaurant
  • There are also more small (uninhabited) islets I’d like to visit: Anguillita, Scilly Cay, Dog Island, the Prickly Pear Cays, Seal Island, and even as far as Sombrero Island (the holy grail of Anguilla). Some of these can be explored by an organized day trip (catamaran) or by DIY sea kayaking
  • Watch or join a local regatta
  • Food-wise, I think Anguilla is going to be tricky; most local foods are seafood and vegetarian dishes seem hard to find (but I’m happy to be proven wrong if you have better info!). If there’s any Rastafarian ital food, I’m definitely down!
  • Hitchhike or crew a boat in or out of Anguilla. You can check out my CrewBay profile here!
  • If I’m feeling like it, I’d like to do the horseriding in Cova Bay
  • Visit the Anguilla arch, which is a natural rock formation and a scenic spot
  • Visit some lighthouses or simple beacons (see map)
