Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory in the Western Caribbean that I haven’t visited (yet). The closest I’ve been to that part of the globe is the Dominican Republic in 2014 during a short stopover in Punta Cana or a visit to San Andrés and Providencia in Colombia in 2017. For my EU passport, the Cayman Islands maintains a maximum visa-free stay of 6 months, for tourist purposes only, which is nice and generous.

Once there are posts about the Cayman Islands, they’ll show up below this page. Until then, maybe read something about Cabo Verde, MexicoPanama, or the Dominican Republic?

Things I’d Like to Do in the Cayman Islands

  • Hitchhike! It’s probably not often going to be with Caymanians since they’re less than 50% of the population, but there is hope. I stand by that hitchhiking is the best way to get to know the locals/visitors to any place
  • Visit the capital George Town on Grand Cayman: the Cayman Islands National Museum, Seven Mile Beach, the yacht club (for hitchhiking/crewing a sailing boat!), and Hell (see map)
  • Do some hiking trails on each island. Grand Cayman has the Mastic Trail
  • Visit some natural areas and gardens, such as Barker’s National Park, Blue Iguana Nature Reserve, the blowholes, the Cayman Turtle Center, the bioluminescent bay, Cayman Crystal Caves, and the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park
  • Learn about Cayman Island’s history at Pedro St. James and Bodden Town Mission House
  • Visit the other two islands besides the main island Grand Cayman (pop. ~53.000). The other two are Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. Preferably, I’d travel between the islands by boat (perhaps by hitchhiking a yacht). The distance between them is only 7.5 kilometers.
    • Cayman Brac (pop. ~1900):
      • Hike up the highest point The Bluff (41masl). Should be doable.
      • National Trust Parrot Reserve
      • Hike the Lighthouse Trail (and visit the lighthouse at the end)
      • Visit the Great Cave, Peter’s Cave, and the Bat Cave
      • Cayman Brac Museum
    • Little Cayman (pop. ~160):
      • Attend the Little Cayman Heritage Festival
      • Hike the Salt Rock Trail
      • Visit the Booby Pond Nature Reserve and the Little Cayman Museum
      • Walk to the East End Lighthouse
      • Swim or kayak to Owen Island, a small islet
  • Be there in Pirates Week in November
  • Hitchhike or crew a yacht in or out of the Cayman Islands. It’s better than flying. Need crew? Check out my CrewBay profile!
