Greenland is a country I haven’t traveled to (yet) that is currently part of Denmark. I have been to the latter.
I’ve never really come close to visiting Greenland, but I’m definitely down to visit. It seems like an incredible place to live and travel around. I think it would probably be wise to visit in late spring, summer or early autumn.
I hope that in the future, you can find posts about Greenland on this page. For now, perhaps read about other countries in Europe, such as Norway, Denmark, and Scotland?
Things I’d Like to Do in Greenland
- Hitchhike a few kilometers wherever there’s a road. I understand this is a bit of a tall order over there, but I still think hitchhiking is the best way to meet local people
- Pick up some words in Greenlandic
- Visit the capital Nuuk, learn about the history of Greenland, and visit museums and lighthouses
- Take ferries around the world’s largest island. I know there are some ferries that operate along the fjordful coast, such as the Arctic Umiaq Line and Diskoline on the west coast. Otherwise, I’ll need to take planes and helicopters
- Visit the Arboretum Groenlandicum in Narsarsuaq, the UNESCO Aasivissuit – Nipisat Inuit Hunting Grounds, the UNESCO Kujataa Norse and Inuit Farming at the Edge of the Ice Cap, Sermermiut, Kangeq, and the abandoned aircraft Kee Bird
- Enjoy the stunning and unique nature: Aajuitsup Tasia Lake, Ilulissat Icefjord, Jakobshavn Glacier, various hot springs, and Gunnbjørn Fjeld (3694masl)
- Travel to remote places: the Cape Farewell Archipelago/Nunap Isua (and the southernmost point), Maniitsoq Island, the length of Nuup Kangerlua Fjord, Tasiilaq on the east coast, Sisimiut, Ilulissat, Uummannaq, and Qaanaaq (CTBTO nuclear test detector), Hans Island (disputed)
- Kayaking on a glacier, lake, or the sea
- I’d love to witness the return of the sun or the departure of the sun
- Hike the 160-kilometer Arctic Circle Trail
- I’d love to combine this with trying to see the northern lights again. This is frankly a phenomenon I can’t get enough of
- This is another wishful thought, but I’d like to arrive and depart Greenland by boat (and NOT on a limited time ashore cruise!). I’m aware some people go there with sailing boats, which is definitely something I’m down to help crew

Hitchhiking Bucket List: #6 Ice Road (Truckers?)
Places that are hard to reach fascinate me. You might know that I’ve already been to the largest city unreachable by road—Iquitos in Perú. That journey from Pucallpa to Iquitos and from Iquitos to El Coca in Ecuador takes several days by boat. But what about areas that freeze? Some locales I’ve been dreaming of for a long time are only accessible by seasonal ice road. And yes, I’m looking at you, Yakutsk. Yakutsk in the Sakha Republic of Russia is the second-biggest city that is not (yet) reachable by permanent road. In the summer, they have car ferries across theContinue reading
