Montserrat

Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean that I haven't visited (yet). Less than 5000 people live on the island. The closest I’ve been to that part of the globe is the Dominican Republic in 2014 during a short stopover in Punta Cana. For my EU passport, Montserrat maintains a visa-free stay of 6 months, which is quite a lot. Once there are posts about Montserrat, they’ll show up below this page. Until then, maybe read something about Cabo Verde, Mexico, Panama, or the Dominican Republic? Things I’d Like to Do in Montserrat First of all, I'd like to hitchhike a short distance with the locals I usually enjoy visiting the capital of an island, but we have to talk about that volcanic eruption first. Since the eruption of Soufrière Hills Volcano in 1995–1999, Montserrat has been 'between capitals'. The previous capital Plymouth lies in ruins, the current de facto capital Brades is temporary, and the future capital in Little… Read more >

Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory in the Western Caribbean that I haven't visited (yet). The closest I’ve been to that part of the globe is the Dominican Republic in 2014 during a short stopover in Punta Cana or a visit to San Andrés and Providencia in Colombia in 2017. For my EU passport, the Cayman Islands maintains a maximum visa-free stay of 6 months, for tourist purposes only, which is nice and generous. Once there are posts about the Cayman Islands, they’ll show up below this page. Until then, maybe read something about Cabo Verde, Mexico, Panama, or the Dominican Republic? Things I’d Like to Do in the Cayman Islands Hitchhike! It's probably not often going to be with Caymanians since they're less than 50% of the population, but there is hope. I stand by that hitchhiking is the best way to get to know the locals/visitors to any place Visit the capital George Town on Grand Cayman: the… Read more >

Aruba

Aruba is a country within the Netherlands in the Caribbean that I haven't been to (yet). The closest I’ve been to this Leeward Antilles island country is the Dominican Republic in 2014 during a short stopover in Punta Cana. As a Dutch citizen, I could stay up to 180 days per 365 days. Other EU citizens (like my partner Jonas) can stay up to 90 days in 180 days. Also, paying in guilders (Aruban florin) again would be a blast from the past for me. Once there are posts about Aruba, they’ll show up below this page. Until then, maybe read something about Cabo Verde, Panama, or the Dominican Republic? Things I’d Like to Do in Aruba Hitchhike, pick up some words and phrases in Aruban Papiamento (Portuguese-based Creole) Visit the capital Oranjestad: the History Museum[note]Learn about slavery in Aruba. It's a common misconception that due to poor soil, this Antillean Island didn't have slaves. 15% of the population were Indigenous/African… Read more >

Kayak Trip Day 36: Čunovo to the Danube Floodplains – Freecamping

Evens occurred on Saturday the 10th of August, 2019. We paddled our buoyant Zucchini from the Čunovo Dam to somewhere in the Danube Floodplains protected landscape area in the Slovak-Hungarian border region. We paddled 36 kilometers that day. At night, we freecamped next to the river for the first time on this trip. Leaving Čunovo for the Danube Floodplains We only stayed one night in Čunovo. For the morning, we managed to arrange breakfast at 7:30. The guy who had cheffed up dinner so enthusiastically the night before were not so fond of our early breakfast time; we had to beg forContinue reading

Crafting Cyrillic Hitchhiking Signs (Negotin, Serbia)

When hitchhiking with a dear friend of mine in Serbia, it was time to make some new hitchhiking signs. For domestic use, it can be nice to write hitchhiking signs in the Cyrillic alphabet. Like this Београд (Belgrade) sign I was crafting at a café in Negotin. This is not really an area where you expect a non-Serbian driver to stop and pick you up. Also, I love, love, love the Cyrillic script. In the end, hitchhiking in Russia for an extended period of time is still my biggest dream. Unlike some of my dreams, I don’t think this one isContinue reading
