La Réunion is a territory I haven’t traveled to (yet). As an overseas department of France, I think it’s a very interesting part of the world and the ‘Eurozone’ to visit one day. In the grand scheme of things, this island isn’t very far away from Mauritius and Madagascar, so it will make the most sense to visit this island on a trip combining these countries.
I hope that in the future, you can find posts about Réunion on this page. For now, perhaps read about other countries I have been to, such as Malaysia, the UAE, and Cabo Verde?
Things I’d Like to Do in Réunion
- Hitchhike with locals. I saw that the circumference of the island by road is like 212 kilometers, so that seems like a fun multi-week hitchhiking project
- Something on my hitchhiking bucket list: marvels of engineering is the 110 meter high Bras de la Plaine bridge. Same for the Route des Tamarins bridge. The French really know how to build bridges
- Hike up or at least spot Piton des Neiges (3070masl), which is the highest point on the island and the highest mountain in the Indian Ocean
- Do some sailing. I can help crew yachts and stuff and (CrewBay profile here and Find a Crew profile here) would love to enter/depart Réunion by sailing boat
- Explore the island capital Saint-Denis: the history, gardens, restaurants, Lazarets de la Grande-Chaloupe, beach promenades, and other interesting places
- Check out the smaller Pierrefonds Airport in the south of the island
- Admire the Piton de la Fournaise volcano from a safe distance
- Perhaps visit a vanilla plantation if that’s possible
- Spend time in the most beautiful areas of Réunion National Park
- Swim in the Grand Étang lake. Maybe it’s possible to follow a canyon downstream via some small rivers
