Saint Pierre and Miquelon is an overseas territory of France I haven’t traveled to (yet). I’ve never really been close to that area, but since finding out there’s a piece of France next to Canada in 2016 or something recent like that, I’ve wanted to go there.
Though I’m currently not in the phase of actually heading there, I did collect some ideas that need storing. If you’d rather read about places I’ve already been to, may I suggest France, Spain, and Mexico?
Things I’d Like to Do in Saint Pierre and Miquelon
- Hitchhike with locals on both islands (you knew this was coming)
- Visit the capital Saint-Pierre. I’d love to learn more about the history, Basque culture (there’s a Basque Festival), life today, and what things are like in such a remote corner of the European Union. I’m aware that this part of France and the EU is often overlooked and that the standards of living/infrastructure aren’t as high (which means the responsible parties should send more support to elevate conditions)
- Visit the two airports: Saint-Pierre Airport and the smaller Miquelon Airport
- The same applies to the harbors; I’d love to either arrive or depart to Canada via the ferry to/from Fortune in Newfoundland and Labrador. It appears though that these ferries only work during the small window of spring and summer. Preferably, to travel to and from Miquelon town, I’d use the ferry and not a flight. Île aux Marins can only be reached by tiny boat and I’m very excited to make that trip
- See some abandoned places/structures. There are some beached shipwrecks and such things that carry a lot of history in beautiful windswept settings. Most of them seem to be on Île aux Marins, which is a ghost town
- Hike or hitchhike up Morne de la Grande Montagne (240masl), the highest point of the territory on Grande Miquelon island
- Enjoy nature at Grand Barachois Nature Reserve (Miquelon). I’d also like to hike along the narrow tombolo to Langlade (the southern blob of the island) and see the Belle river
- There are also quite some cool lighthouses to either visit or admire from outside
