Brunei Darussalam is a country I haven’t traveled to (yet). There was the idea to visit Brunei in 2020 when it would join Malaysia and Singapore in a travel bubble, but that travel bubble never happened. That’s the reason why I’d done quite some research into Brunei already even though the trip didn’t materialize. Hopefully, I can visit this small Sultanate on a future trip to Asia. Before 2020 people with my passport could spend 90 days there and I’d like to spend at least 45 days.
- Hitchhike with locals. I’d love to hitchhike across the brand new (March 2020) bridge to Temburong District called the Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge which is 30 kilometers long!
- Explore the capital Bandar Seri Begawan, especially Kampong Ayer by boat
- Spend some time in Temburong District in nature at the Ulu Temburong National Park
- See some beautiful mosques, forests, beaches, palaces
- Perhaps it’s possible to go kayaking somewhere? I’d love to paddle to Tanjong Pelumpong
- Maybe hike up Bukit Pagon (1850masl)? Last time I checked, the highest mountain in Brunei only was accessible from the Sarawak side
- Finally, learn some Malay and speak those few phrases confidently (I never managed in Malaysia)
Right now, it’s not really interesting for me to do intensive research into visiting this country and gathering information. But once there are ideas of visiting or if I find inspiration, I might add it here.
If you know cool places and things to do in Brunei, comment below so I can always find your suggestions again once I start making the dream come true! Tips are especially welcome if you are Bruneian or have lived there for a while

Traveling in Malaysia during the Pandemic (Another Heckin’ Diary)
This little diary is a continuation of the ‘Pandemic in Penang’ diary I’ve kept during Malaysia’s harder lockdown. Long story short: we were traveling in Malaysia and other Asian countries when the coronavirus lockdowns caught us in George Town, Penang. We stayed there during the various phases of lockdown, from MCO to CMCO and RMCO (“Recovery Movement Control Order”). When interstate travel opened up, we planned our departure from Penang to travel within Malaysia’s borders. “SOP” stands for “Standard Operating Procedure”. Days since we entered Malaysia: Days since the start of the Movement Control Order (MCO): Travel days since we finallyContinue reading
Pandemic in Penang: A Play-by-Play from Two Digital Nomads in Malaysia
Before you judge our decision to stay in Malaysia and not ‘repatriate’ ourselves, scroll to the bottom to read our motivations for riding out the pandemic in Penang/George Town. If coronavirus statistics trigger your anxiety, this journal might not be for you. Also, I wrote this, so not everything here reflects Jonas’ views. My sources for Malaysia come from the trilingual news website Malaysia Kini, which has an excellent COVID-19 tracker which adds new functionality almost twice a week, and our elevator. My world stats come from the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 Dashboard, which unfortunately keeps butchering country names. TheContinue reading
