The Faroe Islands is a country I haven’t traveled to (yet) that is currently part of Denmark. I have been to the latter.
I’d love to visit this archipelago one day. One day in 2013, I was in the Shetland Islands in Scotland and asked around if anyone knew about a ferry or boat to the Faroes. No dice. Then in 2015, a friend asked if I wanted to join his summer trip to Iceland to go LARP as Vikings. He’d take the ferry from Denmark that stops in the Faroe Islands. I really wanted to join, but I didn’t make it up to northern Europe in 2015 and then I fucked off to South America for two years.
I hope that in the future, you can find posts about the Faroe Islands on this page. For now, perhaps read about other countries in Europe, such as Norway, Denmark, and Scotland?
Things I’d Like to Do in the Faroe Islands
- Hitchhike with the locals! And while doing that, I’d like to hitchhike the Rundkørsel i Eysturoyartunnilin—the underwater tunnel that features a freaking roundabout! A true masterpiece of human engineering and killing two birds with one stone. It opened to the public in late 2020
- Visit the capital city Tórshavn, the old part of town Tinganen, and Fort Skansin. It seems like an appropriate size of city to get to know in depth
- Pick up some Faroese words and phrases
- Arrive in the country by ferry with the Smyril Line. It doesn’t matter if I arrive from Seyðisfjörður in Iceland or Hirtshals in Denmark, as long as I arrive by boat. I’d also be up for a sailing journey (in a Viking boat) like that, although the North Atlantic should not be messed with
- Climb the highest peak Slættaratindur (masl880)
- Visit and climb as many lighthouses as I can, such as the one in Nólsoy
- Hike at the second-highest sea cliff in the world named Cape Enniberg, which is a dizzying 754 meters tall. Also hiking in general, via all the tiny footbridges, such as the one that connects to the lighthouse in Mykines
- Visit the cliff lake named Sørvágsvatn which has a waterfall named Bøsdalafossur that drops into the Atlantic Ocean. Perhaps it’s possible to kayak on the lake?
- In general, I’d love to go kayaking there, but it’s most likely at sea and therefore with a guided tour because well, it all sounds kind of dangerous
- Visit as many (small, inhabited) islands as I can. For some, it’s possible to go by local ferry. It would also be cool to take a helicopter. The Faroe Islands only has one proper airport, but several active heliports all over the archipelago
- Go puffin and sheep watching

Why We Started Catsitting + How to Start Housesitting to Travel
It all started with a cat named Monday. At least, that’s what we called her. And after finding a forever home for her, we wanted to have more cats in our lives without the drama and the tears. More happy stories of beloved felines that receive regular veterinary care. Fewer stories of kittens discarded on a hiking trail or born in a colony on a rooftop. Just taking care of cats for a few days or weeks or months and then handing back the responsibility to their pet parents who missed them dearly and are grateful for the help. ThatContinue reading
