Mongolia is a country I haven’t traveled to (yet). In 2013 bought a spot for the Mongol Rally of 2014, but in the end, I didn’t do it. Because not having a car is infinitely better and I dropped out of university and was hitchhiking on the other side of the world. Well, not literally; I was hitchhiking in Central America and not in Caleta Yungay (Chile) when the rally started. But I digress…
I did meet many people at the HitchGathering (2015) who had hitchhiked in Mongolia. Their stories seemed like great adventures. My current partner Jonas has also been to Mongolia in 2009 and he also loved it.
I hope that in the future, you can find posts about Mongolia on this page. For now, perhaps read about other countries in Asia, such as Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan?
Things I’d Like to Do in Mongolia
- Hitchhike with locals, you knew this was coming!
- Explore the capital Ulaanbaatar: the ancient, the Soviet, and the recent
- Visit the old airport of Ulaanbaatar (Buyant-Ukhaa International Airport), which has been replaced by the new airport in July 2021
- Sleep in yurts. The one time I yurt-surfed in Spain I loved it. Best tent ever! A bit bulky though…
- Maybe, maybe try to ascend Khüiten Peak (4356masl) in the far west. It seems too technical and too many permits (it’s on the border with China) for my liking, though
- Learn a few words of Mongolian and perhaps try to read the vertical script a little. What I know from Mongolian metal is that it sounds great and I’d love to say something useful in Mongolian
- Try to find the Great Tent of Genghis Khan, which is pure fantasy
Right now, it’s not really interesting for me to do intensive research into visiting this country and gathering information. But once there are ideas of visiting or if I find inspiration, I might add it here.

Why We Started Catsitting + How to Start Housesitting to Travel
It all started with a cat named Monday. At least, that’s what we called her. And after finding a forever home for her, we wanted to have more cats in our lives without the drama and the tears. More happy stories of beloved felines that receive regular veterinary care. Fewer stories of kittens discarded on a hiking trail or born in a colony on a rooftop. Just taking care of cats for a few days or weeks or months and then handing back the responsibility to their pet parents who missed them dearly and are grateful for the help. ThatContinue reading
