Hitchhiking Failure of the Year: No Malta to Sicily

Philosopher Jagger once said “you can’t always get what you want” and that’s what happened last night. I couldn’t find a boat willing to take me to Sicily from Malta. It’s a hitchhiking failure! Therefore I was forced to use the extortionately priced ferry! After more than three weeks in Malta and almost one week at the marina, enough was enough. And I’m very sad about it.

Mick Jagger also said, “but if you try sometimes, you might find, you get what you need!” Though it was frustrating, the people from La Marina Trattoria were so kind to feed me and give me free drinks if there was a wrong order, as well as the “Meeting the Odyssey” theatre company from the boat named Hoppet who couldn’t take me to Lampedusa and lastly the good samaritan from Ireland who helped me pay for the silly ferry!

I am currently in Siracusa, Sicily and I’m going to do some sightseeing before hitchhiking to Catania or Messina to make it to mainland Italy. Do I feel defeated? Yes, but some things are more important than boat hitchhiking, such as seeing my family and attending the HitchGathering in France. Would I have tried longer if there was no time pressure? Certainly, I’d be in Malta until that hypothetical yacht would finally take me! 😉 I hope this will be my only hitchhiking failure this year… I don’t think I can deal with another major setback like this.
