I was in Malaysia for 339 days (about 11 months) from the 27th of February 2020 till the 30th of January, 2021. That’s because Jonas and I were in lockdown there during the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Despite the lockdown, we still managed to explore quite a bit of Peninsular Malaysia (i.e. West Malaysia). We didn’t visit East Malaysia (i.e. on the island of Borneo) at all because they have their own immigration policies and they remained closed for tourists who had overstayed their visas in the peninsula. That was us because we spent our 90 days mostly in lockdown in Penang. But we could overstay our 90-day welcome because the government introduced a policy of amnesty for stranded tourists.
Anyway, we eventually decided to leave towards the United Arab Emirates because the amnesty rule felt less secure with each extension. Because of the lockdowns, I’ve done a lot of research on what cool things to do in Malaysia. I’ll have to make them a reality next time if the country ever reopens without restrictions.
Things I’d Like to Do Next Time in Malaysia
- Hitchhike more. Last time I hitchhiked seriously only for one day before the lockdown started
- Visit Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan. Probably with a side trip to Brunei to renew our 90 days
- Explore the capital Kuala Lumpur; KL was the worst place to be during much of the pandemic, so we avoided staying there for a long time. I want to do indoor skiing/snowboarding
- Visit Pahang and Terengganu; besides Kota Bharu, we didn’t visit many places on the peninsular east coast. Think Pulau Kapas and areas in Bukit Tinggi
- Eat so much more vegetarian munchies. The food in Malaysia was really top-notch
- Go kayaking even more!
- Revisit our favorite places in Penang and Johor Bahru
If you know cool places and things to do in Malaysia, comment at the bottom of this page so I can always find your suggestions again once I start plotting my return! Tips especially welcome if you are Malaysian or lived there for a while

Hello, Dubai?! Leaving Malaysia for the UAE After 339 Days (Semi-Live Blog)
You know I’ve been ruminating on it. But after 339 days, it’s finally time to leave Malaysia. We’re traveling to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This is a semi-live blog that I’ll update throughout the journey. I’ll edit in photos once I’m back on my laptop. The Weeks Before Departure to Dubai On the evening of the start of ‘MCO 2.0’, Jonas and I were smoking shisha at Chimney Hookah Café in Johor Bahru (JB). We’d just made the most of our last day without stay-inside-order and we finished it off with a banger. One thing had beenContinue reading
Immigration Scare 2021: Are We Done, Malaysia?
As you might know, Jonas and I have been in Malaysia for nearly a year. But we aren’t expats, nay, we’re ‘Tourists stranded in Malaysia‘ (TSIMY). The Malaysian government basically granted us amnesty to stay in the country during the COVID-19 crisis. They call the special rules ‘the MCO’, which have an end date that has been extended by weeks or months every time the deadline approaches. This is stuff I’ve detailed in my pandemic diaries. Every time they extend the MCO rules for the pandemic, we might hear the news that we have to leave. Thus far, the government’sContinue reading
Traveling in Malaysia during the Pandemic (Another Heckin’ Diary)
This little diary is a continuation of the ‘Pandemic in Penang’ diary I’ve kept during Malaysia’s harder lockdown. Long story short: we were traveling in Malaysia and other Asian countries when the coronavirus lockdowns caught us in George Town, Penang. We stayed there during the various phases of lockdown, from MCO to CMCO and RMCO (“Recovery Movement Control Order”). When interstate travel opened up, we planned our departure from Penang to travel within Malaysia’s borders. “SOP” stands for “Standard Operating Procedure”. Days since we entered Malaysia: Days since the start of the Movement Control Order (MCO): Travel days since we finallyContinue reading
Tanjung Piai, Malaysia: the Southernmost Point of Mainland Asia
We visited this extreme point in Asia on the 26th of August, 2020. This was during the pandemic, therefore visiting Tanjung Piai Johor National Park (Taman Negara Johor Tanjung Piai) came with all sorts of rules. The Idea to Visit Tanjung Piai As you might know, visiting the extreme points of the continents is my thing. I mostly enjoy visiting the mainland extreme points because they’re easier to measure than what island still counts as Europe or Asia, etc. So before we traveled to Asia in 2019, I’d looked up a few places like this, and Tanjung Piai in Peninsular MalaysiaContinue reading
Pandemic in Penang: A Play-by-Play from Two Digital Nomads in Malaysia
Before you judge our decision to stay in Malaysia and not ‘repatriate’ ourselves, scroll to the bottom to read our motivations for riding out the pandemic in Penang/George Town. If coronavirus statistics trigger your anxiety, this journal might not be for you. Also, I wrote this, so not everything here reflects Jonas’ views. My sources for Malaysia come from the trilingual news website Malaysia Kini, which has an excellent COVID-19 tracker which adds new functionality almost twice a week, and our elevator. My world stats come from the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 Dashboard, which unfortunately keeps butchering country names. TheContinue reading
Getting a SIM Card in Malaysia
This article is a comprehensive guide to getting the best prepaid SIM card in Malaysia. “RM” is short for Malaysian Ringgit—their currency. Click “In Short” in the table of contents to skip over the text and get a step-by-step guide. For starters, the Malaysian country code is +60 Telecom in Malaysia Malaysia is a country that has two parts: a mainland Asian part called ‘Peninsular Malaysia’ and an island part on Borneo referred to as ‘East Malaysia’. Hat Yai to Kota Bharu: Hitchhiking from Thailand to Malaysia via Tak Bai
Things in this story happened on Thursday the 27th of February, 2020. Jonas and I hitchhiked from Hat Yai (Songkhla) in southern Thailand to Kota Bharu (Kelantan) in Malaysia. We took the Tak Bai river border crossing. This is my first time in Malaysia and Jonas’ second visit. Taking a Grab to the Hitchhiking Spot After five days of enjoying a few of the sights in Hat Yai, it was time for us to move on. Besides finding a new spot to hitchhike from, we didn’t need to prepare much for this hitchhiking day. Jonas and I found two viableContinue reading
It hurts – 8th of August, 2026 (Breakup Recovery)
8 August 2026 It hurts. But I’m doing my own thing without constant discussion and criticism. There are a lot of things I’ve learned since the 6th of September 2015. One of them is that finding a good partner who treats you well doesn’t mean a thing. They can absolutely turn around and actively decide to become a piece of shit. Someone who abandons all their principles and goes from being your dream human being to your biggest enemy. Everyone always says “Just find a good [insert gender]”. I’d found one who was a much better partner than my otherContinue reading
Freedom, at Last – 23rd till 26th of July (Breakup Recovery)
I’m amazing at being vulnerable. And look where that got me. Jonas Breuer and I saw each other for the last time before my flight from Singapore to Rome. I’d had a little over two months to prepare, as we broke up on the 12th of May. We had scheduled commitments for that time, plus five extra days in Indonesia to say goodbye, and that was that. In those two months, I don’t want to go into the details; we flip-flopped back and forth. I know the non-fucked up parts inside of him will always love me. This is aboutContinue reading
A Day Trip to Houtong Cat Village, Taiwan
I visited Houtong Cat Village 猴硐貓村 with my situationship Jonas on the 18th of May, 2026. We departed by train from Taipei and continued on by train to Xinchen Taroko near the Taroko Gorge. This is part of our trip around Taiwan Planning our First Train Route in Taiwan I knew the minute I’d read about Houtong Cat Village that I wanted to visit. Jonas was also down, before our relationshit hit the fan on the 12th of May, and also after. After all, it was me who taught him the benefits of cats and how to love them back inContinue reading
