Welcome to my travel overview page! Here you can find out where I’ve been, which countries I’ve written about, and what major routes I’ve hitchhiked and paddled since 2013. All with nice maps!

My Articles Projected onto a Map
Zoom and drag across the map to see if I’ve written about a specific location. You can click a map location pin to read the corresponding article. I placed some articles on a seamount in the middle of the ocean if it’s not location-based. Some generic articles about a country are placed near its center.
Map markers are color-coded into topics: hitchhiking, kayaking + sailing + swimming + ferries/cruises, hiking + nature + cycling, informative, guest + collaborative posts and interviews, digital nomad, food, ask me anything, hospitality + couchsurfing, space travel + observatories, (free)camping, animals, diary-style + blogging, extreme + country high points, urban exploring + architecture, and miscellaneous.
Counting the Countries World Map
The Hitchhiking Routes Retraced
Many hitchhikers keep some statistics on their waiting times, distances and average speed, and the like. I don’t really do that. Keeping track of the routes is easy enough, but the waiting times? Isn’t that potentially horribly depressing? Anyway, you do you!
I used to carry around a little book that I to take note of my rides. I wrote down the date (if I was aware), from where to where, what the driver’s name was, and the topics we chatted about. It has no use in a spreadsheet. Today, I use my phone to take notes and the slightly creepy features of Google do the rest of the work to track my trips.
Here I made a few interactive maps of a few trips and added a few other details. If it was my first time in a country they are written in italics. Since making these maps and calculating stuff is quite a lot of work, this list is not complete at all and misses a lot of the trips I’ve done in the past. I do my best, though, to be thorough.
Use the table of contents to quickly travel to the continent or trip you’re looking for. Some maps are more advanced than others. If you see this symbol, you can find additional information by hovering over it with your mouse or tapping and holding it on your phone.

Kayak+Work on the Danube River (2019)
Between May and September 2019, we paddled halfway down the Danube River. Nope, it’s not hitchhiking, but it’s a different kind of awesome. If you want to learn more about taking our laptops in an inflatable kayak, visit the Danube overview page with interactive maps and even a nice excel sheet. For the second half paddled in 2024, there will be maps published soon above.
The Gap Year from Traveling (2018–2019)
Two Years in South America (2015–2017)
Google My Maps has a limit on how many places you can add on one map, so there are three maps to show the entire trip in South America. Some stats:
Start and finish: Arrived in Santos, Brazil. Departed from Bogotá, Colombia.
Time frame: From 18 November 2015 till 12 December 2017.
Total kilometers hitched: 30163 kilometers
Number of rides: An estimated 281 rides
Countries sequence: Brazil → Paraguay → Bolivia → Perú → Chile → Argentina → Chile → Argentina → Chile → Argentina → Uruguay → Argentina → Chile → Perú → Ecuador → Colombia.
Languages needed: Spanish, Portuguese, English, and German.
Now here are the three maps with their separate data:
South America Part III: Northern South America
South America Part II: Southern Cone + the End of the World
South America Part I: Arriving by Repositioning Cruise
The Edges of Europe Tour (2015)
To the Caucasus, Iran, Turkey, etc. (2014)
Central America + A Touch of Caribbean (2014)
A Dropout Hitchhikes in the UK (2013)
Summer of Age: My First Big Europe Trip (2013)
Meta Stats without Maps
If you add up the numbers on this page, I hitchhiked 86137 kilometers in total (edit: very outdated info. I don’t feel like counting, honestly!). But I hitchhiked a bit more than that in other places that I haven’t made maps of yet. I’ll add those maps and update the numbers when I find the time!
Why can’t you hitch guatemala?
You totally can hitch Guatemala. I did so in 2014 and thought it was one of the easiest and safest countries in the region to hitch in 😉
Great trips and maps, Iris! I love your ideas and reading your motivational posts!
Happy you like it! 😀
Woww awesome maps and trips. I just loved it. The ideas that you have mentioned are quite motivating. These ideas will motivate people to travel more and more and explore new places. I also love travelling.
Happy you like it! 🙂 This is by far not a complete list of itineraries though 😉
As a fellow lover of doing hitchhiking, this is impressive! I’m following your tips for Iran as I’m going there in November. What an amazing log you have here!
Thanks Juan! 😀 It’s November now, did you make it to Iran? Which route did you hitchhike? 🙂
